about

You know what a train is? It comes into the station, the doors open & you step onto it ... right. So we know what a train is. So .... [said he, pausing for a slurp]

It was Saturday, 1 a.m. & I was walking through Clapham Yard, a train park in south London. Trains are big at ground level, like a canyon. I had just parked-up a 508 Hesperus Class, a charming train to work with, as long as you don't expect it to work right.

I had a notion for some words in my head as I trudged on over the ballast. I got to the gate to meet my cab home, where the office said I should be. I waited half an hour. In the same half hour the cab was parked in beside the shack posing as an office, waiting for me ... zoot alors!

So off we went ... to the nearest traffic jam, where we sat for another half hour, in case we were happy like, England's very democratic like that; you get shite everywhere. I started writing on the back of my schedule card & by the time I got home I had the lot.

So I started right away. I did the pianos first, I was that sure of how it sings. The pianos are as good as it gets after traffic jams & a hitting the fridge. I wanted it to sound like a movie, different voices for different ideas bla bla ... & plus I'd heard about Bowie using different mics-per-verse on Heros ... so I thought my usual why the fuck not ??!! .. so I set up 3 mics, all different e.q., gated for voice level [& me fucked] & away I went ... but I forgot something; the squeeky chair I was sitting on, so I could turn to each mic, so very early in the song, if you listen close [ehem] you will hear a 'gurk!' from the chair .... the result is what you're listening to. C'mon! Cinema Verite!!

Stac Coll The Netherlands

A radio presenter in Dublin said 'but life has no sound track' & I thought 'wait a mo, that's what I do'. It took that long for me to find a 'product description'. My working life has been about getting the means to record it the way I hear it, my own studio. The work was weird, from mixing U2 to wiring nuclear power plant. I can do it now & this is the record; peoples' lives & how life is. ... more
